Gairloch Stockings

Knitting Pattern

This is a traditional kilt stocking pattern from Gairloch. The ‘Gairloch pattern’ was used for stockings in the main but was also widely applied to waistcoats and other garments. Normally employing two shades of wool, the pattern could be more elaborately coloured but the design remained standard.

Stockings in this pattern were made from home spun wool by the women of Gairloch parish to provide an additional income during the destitution years in the middle of the c.19th.

This modern version of the traditional pattern was developed by staff and volunteers at Gairloch Heritage Museum to raise funds for the museum. It is based on knitted objects in the museum’s collection, and notes on the old patterns held in the museum’s archive.

The Museum Guidebook has been written by some of our volunteer staff, who are here, week after week, year after year, sharing their love and knowledge of the Museum and the local area with visitors from across the world.

Not only is this richly illustrated 36 page booklet an attractive souvenir of some of the wonderful exhibits on display, but it provides background information about Gairloch parish and the life of the local people in past times to enhance your understanding of our heritage. Guide to Gairloch and Loch Maree

and a Map and Illustrations

By John H. Dixon, F.S.A. Scot.

This book is essential reading if you want to know all about life in the area, especially if you are researching your family tree as it gives a lot interesting detail about the parish your ancestors came from and may even mention them by name.

Dixon's 'Gairloch' has long been recognised as a minor classic. Written in 1886, it describes in considerable detail all aspects of the history, physical features and life in the parish of Gairloch at that time. The writer, John H. Dixon, made his home at Inveran on the shores of Loch Maree, and took a keen interest in the welfare of the inhabitants whom he represented for many years on the County Council.

The hardback book has been reprinted by the museum several times, most recently in 2004. It is sold in Gairloch Heritage Museum shop (as well as at Gairloch TIC and Beinn Eighe Visitor Centre). It can be ordered from the museum at this price plus postage and packing as detailed below.

Eighty Years in the Highlands

By Pauline Butler

From 1863 Osgood Hanbury Mackenzie created and developed a garden at Inverewe which is now world famous. However, few who visit appreciate his significant roles as a ‘heritor’ in the Wester Ross community of Gairloch and Poolewe, or know of his interests in farming, natural history and the Gaelic culture.

In this study, local historian and Museum secretary, Pauline Butler, details the personal and public life of this complex man. She takes us from his childhood years in the 1840s, a time of destitution and famine, through the crofting and poor law, religious and education reforms of the later 1800s and into the widening horizons of the twentieth century. Much of the contemporary evidence used was discovered here in the Gairloch Heritage Museum archives, which also provided many of the revealing illustrations.

Eighty Years in the Highlands

is a fascinating and valuable

contribution to our understanding

of the Highlands during the lifetime

of Osgood Mackenzie.

A Taste of Wester Ross

This is not a normal recipe book - with almost every turn of the page you find an interesting quotation, old photographs and snippets of what life used to be like in Wester Ross or photographs of some of the younger and older residents.  All profits from the sale of the book will go towards building a new museum in Gairloch - a building that will not only house the museum collection, but also provide a new cultural centre for the area.
